Field Notes is built around the local story as a way of looking carefully. We report on culture, neighbourhoods and ideas without pretending that a city can be reduced to a list of attractions or a single week’s agenda. The useful news is often already waiting along the usual route.
Our approach is quiet but not passive. We explain how a proposal, a closure, a new room or a changed schedule reaches a person’s day. We also make room for essays and observations that do not need to become a controversy before they deserve attention.
This edition begins on a damp morning street in Québec City, where the first signs of the day are practical: a bicycle unlocked, a door opened, leaves moved aside from a curb. Those details are a record of a place beginning again.
